The aesthetic goals of immediacy and a natural, unobtrusive presence of the camera also demanded the use of small format film and video. In terms of tactical warfare, this book would probably be better titled On War Against Napoleon, because that’s really what Clausewitz was writing about. It was in Vietnam where he made history — shot down during a flight, he immediately made a death defying escape, with a broken leg and no food, only to be recaptured after three weeks just yards from American lines. Ultimately, most of the street booksellers appearing in the movie – as well as those not appearing - welcomed it as an agreeable depiction of their lives, and several street booksellers to this day continue to keep copies of the film on their sidewalk bookstands as a grass-roots, participatory distribution mechanism.

All sorts of wonderful tactical thoughts and stories of leadership and bravery are shown in their journey home.

From the surge of ebooks to the self-publishing explosion and the growing popularity of audiobooks, Book Wars provides a comprehensive and fine-grained account of technological disruption in one of our most important and successful creative industries.

Book Wars offers up well-crafted chapters on the social changes that have arisen affecting reading as well as trade publishing. Rosette subsequently departed Los Angeles for San Francisco, and commenced to work on editing the documentary there full-time. It might seem weird to recommend a book of fiction on this list, but smarter people than I — and many actual soldiers — have all raved about the accuracy and poignancy of this book. Thompson’s Book Wars is a contemporary history of the book, of publishing, and of the digital revolution of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This book tells the story of the turbulent decades when the book publishing industry collided with the great technological revolution of our time. This is a good book to help you understand that wars are often fought, won, and lost by people you’d never expect could influence the process. Indie publishing is exploding, and Thompson argues that not only are more indie books being published than we have accurately documented (it’s hard to keep track), but that self-publishing continues to grow. Some of the significant personalities that are introduced on 6th Avenue include: Marvin, always wearing his trademark black hat; and Ron, from Jamaica – charismatic, streetwise and outspoken.

Despite the author claiming that physical books are easier to read, this book, I believe, would be easier to read as an e-book where the font size could be increased. My favorite little tidbit, Thucydides fought in the war, but was apparently disgraced and missed much of it because he caught the plague.

SO MUCH WORK went into this book, almost 200 interviews (several of which have to be presented under a pseudonym), and there's a lot of interest to here to even just readers baffled by publishing decisions. You can think of him as a modern John Boyd — applying his thinking not to troop warfare or Pentagon politics but to super-empowered individuals, decentralized groups, and economics.
