The most common ‘solution’ to the ‘problem’ of work was to combine work and pleasure. 18 interviewees were trying or had tried to make money from what they enjoyed, usually music or making films, usually with disappointing results. Each knew that if they failed they would have to get a “proper job”, which represented failure. The most poignant example was a young agricultural labourer, living with his father on the edge of a picturesque village, who thought he could be a rap star and every day went into an old caravan in his garden to practice.
