Unfolding over ten heady days, Dykette is an unforgettable love story at the crossroads of queer nonconformity and seductive normativity. lesbians vacationing together in an upstate house between Christmas and New Years sounded like a great setup for character study and exploration of the dynamic between them. Other reviews claiming that this oeuvre will "kill a straight person", have them "confused" or "hate this book" made me want to read it, but alas, I'm neither dead nor shocked nor raging, I'm not even properly entertained by this beach read-y lesbian relationship story. I think the book is a rejection of the humorless, moralizing, holier than thou tone in literature that I see so much of. it’s written in this fun and very…’modern’ way by someone that actually knows what internet dykes and other queers are up to and not just in a “hello fellow internet crew!It might be a little bit inevitable to confront homophobia and transphobia and all of the things that are definitely coming, so it’s scary, but it’s also exciting and fun. Of course the racial dynamics were shitty, but I didn't come to this book expecting a nuanced conversation about American racial dynamics. Are there other books that depict queer friendship and community in ways that helped to inspire Sasha’s world? Anytime they're being informative, they're also being performative, and assertive about their strict parameters.

This sexy, at times silly, and wonderfully searing romp through our masquerades of identity, love, art, entertaining, and social maneuvering is a deeply observed novel of manners for today. Sasha starts off well, being able to occupy her most comfortable space, as an observer, she remains separate from the crowd, away from all the puffing and preening. Sasha romanticizes traditional marriage and suspects it may be the best way to secure Jesse’s undivided attention for good.i really hope we get to see more lesbian lit that openly embraces butch femme culture, not in just historical fiction where there’s the whole “oh forbidden!

But in Dykette, Sasha seems mostly uninterested in friendship, or at least in the kind of multigenerational queer community that Jules and Miranda might fold her into. Green succulents on the coffee table and a huge metal cactus with prickles to hang their keys and Sasha’s headscarves. Inherent in the way I think about femmeness is that it’s so dynamic and always shifting and moving around based on the emotional and political landscape of the day. The performance art in this book is bold and legitimately shocking, often in this kind of novel a big art setpiece cannot really deliver what it needs to the plot but oh this one does. But the fantasy of the traditional nuclear family ultimately fails to fulfill Sasha’s most desperate desires to be seen and therefore known and loved.

In the queer world, where language, concepts, and terms describing sexuality and gender are both supremely important and constantly in flux, new additions to the lexicon are lapped up feverishly. For example, this moment: "She couldn't believe straight girls made such a big deal about never faking it, like faking it was anti-feminist. So I applaud the novel for intending to discuss that femininity can mean many different things, also related to class, race, and sex, but ultimately, it's unfortunately rather exhausting and boring to follow Sasha performing the most stereotypical kind of womanhood, the kind that is often referenced by misogynists. Vanity Fair: So much of queer fiction seems to be acutely sincere, or only about oppression and hardship. not straight people, honestly, not even general queer people, and even more honestly, probably not even general lesbians.
