Things like complex joinery like mortise and tenons and dovetails become fairly simple with a bit of practice. Users can glide along the intended cutline using dovetail fixtures, templates, jigs and other guidance devices.

The fine bit depth adjustment is very nice and one of my favorite features, especially when your router is mounted to a table. For handheld use, the Router includes a base with two hardwood handles that are very comfortable to grip. The Bosch Precision Centering Design allows the bit to be centered with the sub-base or optional template guides. They make a huge difference in how much you have to shift the router to be able to access the chuck. Furthermore, the Bosch 1617EVS Variable Speed Router comes with a "precision centering system", which makes the router bit track at true center.HP” router in my router table with a Porter Cable in an attempt to get better speed stability under load for some measurements - although it should have, it didn’t really help, but that’s another story (its “magnetic disk” apparently does nothing! The Bosch 1617EVS Variable Speed Router really shines from a functionality standpoint, including the fine bit depth adjustment, "Constant Response Circuitry", "Precision Centering System", noise reduction, and general ease of use. Plunge depth is controlled with the familiar depth rod with locking knob and sliding indicator and turret.

Quality - If you have ever used a Bosch tool, you already know they have a reputation for quality that always seems to be a step above most other manufacturers. Additionally, the 2-inch sub-base opening allows a wide variety of bits to be used with this router. Using the included templet guide adapter and guide bushings is simple, especially with the tool-less bushing retainer system. Other than reduced max RPM, are there other factors to consider if undersizing the VFD or oversizing the motor?

While so many are making the transition to cordless routers, there is still a significant space in your lineup for a solid corded router like this one from Bosch.

When templet bushings are needed, a nicely designed adapter is installed into the opening with two screws.

The only very minor complaint I have with this accessory is that it is in a high-impact spot so it is prone to breaking due to flying small offcuts. If I could find this 1/2"-ER20 with a 3/8" shank, I think I would just use the Carbide Compact Router. As I test out the new "23" I expect to feel more power than with the 1617, perhaps as much as my PC 7518 (rated 3-1/4 HP). Despite all of that, one of the most well-known router uses comes from their ability to add designs to wood edges and making profiles for things like furniture or cabinet doors. The weight would not be too much but the 1/2 inch collet and larger router bits combined with the leverage of the router might be an issue.

S. brands using Imperial measure and these dimensions have carried forward for compatibility with fixture and accessories. HP and array of user-friendly features make this an extremely versatile package that has become a favorite of value-wise woodworkers. My reason for looking elsewhere than the Carbide Compact Router is mainly because I want to use a Haimer probe in the spindle to find the center of work, as I am accustomed to as a machinist. In addition to the spaces for the router motor and bases, molded-in positions for many of the more common accessories, including guide templets, let you keep the pieces associated with this router secure and in one place. In short, no matter how hard or soft the wood, the router maintains the appropriate RPM settings for a nice smooth and accurate cut. The speed control dial is located near the top of the motor housing and features six marked positions but is infinitely adjustable. I currently have 2 of them (One in a Jessem table) and a DCW600B (which I just picked up over the holidays). The variable-speed dial allows the operator to set the optimal speed, and with Constant Response Circuitry, the router will maintain a constant speed throughout the cut, resulting in clean, accurate product.
