It's only missing one thing: T-Mobile's new Band 71, which will give users additional rural coverage (it's currently only in the upcoming LG V30). However, battery life is merely acceptable, the screen could be brighter, and the phone is very expensive.

While the Note 8 is a very strong addition to a competitive playing field, it outpaces all onlookers in only one of our benchmarks: Geekbench 4 multi-core. DeX support means the Note 8 is compatible with the DeX docking station (an optional extra), allowing you to use it like a PC with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Among other things, handwriting and doodles can also be converted to GIFs and emoji should you so desire, and you can now hover the S Pen over any text or sentence to translate it, or use it for currency conversions. Over the S8 Plus, the Note 8 also benefits power users with 6GB or RAM and a superior dual-lens camera, both features passed on to the S9 Plus.

Both phones are narrower than you would expect, given the curved edges, which makes them surprisingly comfortable to use in a single hand. It isn’t quite as good as the wide-angle lens next to it, but it’s a significant improvement over the OnePlus 5’s telephoto snapper, which tended to produce inconsistent, irregularly detailed shots in lower light. Front Camera Features Auto Focus HDR Screen Flash Gesture Shot Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) Panorama Selfie Face Detection 1. Not only that, but the Note 8 also packs Samsung’s first stab at dual-cameras, with a 12-megapixel f/1. In low light the Note 8 also did a great job of picking out the details on our scene of random objects.

Two weeks of testing has us convinced: this is a true redesign of your average smartphone from top-to-bottom, edge-to-edge, and rear camera to, well, rear camera. The extra tenth of an inch of screen is insignificant and doesn’t matter, but Note fans adore the S Pen stylus functionality and its more square shape. On either side the panel curves right round to the frame edge, leaving only a minimal bezel top and bottom in which to house the selfie camera, speaker and various sensors. We were impressed with not only how loud the Note 8’s speaker could go, but also how little it was distorted at maximum volume. But the battery used here has gone through significant testing to ensure it’s up to scratch, and Samsung has also adjusted the Note 8’s design to help ensure things don’t get too hot. We've tested the Note 8 for many months and it's even more interesting today thanks to the new Deep Sea Blue color that came out post-launch in the US and UK, and the big Android Oreo update that it got. The on-screen button that replaces it works fine, but the fingerprint sensor is located on the back of the device and off-center – it’s a textbook flawed design, and the alternative iris scanner doesn’t always work when you want to unlock the phone.

It's really nice to be able to sign and send things without printing them out, something Apple has also been promoting with the Pencil on its iPad Pro. The various shades of black and grey on our digger were clearly defined, the text on the bottle label easily readable, and colours again very true to life. Menus are easy to navigate and it includes several new features, such as app pairing, which enables you to launch 2 different apps at once. And, because this is an AMOLED panel, contrast levels are unbeatable, at a perfect Infinity:1, and maximum brightness reaches a respectable 330cd/m2.The Note 8 costs more than the S8 Plus, although if you’re going to sink a lot of money into a device that you use everyday, you may as well go all the way. Where Samsung has the leg up here, is that you can adjust the amount of blur both while taking the picture and when viewing the image in the gallery.
