This story sometimes felt like a song, a fairy tale, a poem and it challenged me to keep up with it. Violette narrates the start of the story, informing the reader that “I savor life; I sip at it, like jasmine tea sweetened with honey. Violette and her husband Philippe experience a tragedy that adds a mystery element to the story, and we start to see more into his character and motivations. I love visiting cemeteries, so the fact that this is about a female caretaker of a cemetery in France caught my attention immediately.

The illicit romance between Irene and Gabriel is revealed bit by bit, as is the growing rapport between Violette, Julien, and Julien's seven-year-old son Nathan. Konsjerżce, która pachnie jak różany ogród, zna na pamięć „Regulamin tłoczni win” Johna Irvinga, a wakacje letnie spędza w tej jednej zatoczce w okolicy Marsylii.

brings out the exceptional and the poetic in the ordinary and reminds us of the life affirming value of kindness. Wspomnienia są tym, co spaja całość, co pozwala zrozumieć, co sprawia, że w pewnej chwili łykamy łzy i łapczywie łapiemy powietrze. This beautifully translated almost poetic novel tells the story of Violette and people visiting the cemetery. In her, the author paints a portrait of a woman whose past is marked by much loss and personal tragedy but who lives her life with dignity and grace, forging friendships with the people she works with and those who come to grieve .

The present day part of the story takes place when Violette is about 50 and she is happy, in a way one can be happy despite a hollow place in one's heart that will never be filled. So far, it doesn’t seem like much of a story but it is so lyrical, so touching, so sad and so rewarding. What may on the surface of it appear gloomy and morose, in Perrin's hands is an appealing indulgence in nature, food and drink, and, above all, friendships.

With Fresh Water for Flowers, Valérie Perrin has given readers a funny, moving, intimately told story of a woman who believes obstinately in happiness. Interspersed are journal entries of Julien's mother, Irene Fayolle, and her illicit life long love affair with Gabriel. At almost 500 pages it could have used some serious editing IMO and has the same melancholy tone from beginning to end and a fair amount of redundancy. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I have no problem with explicit sex yet here I found less was more in a way that was, well, gratifying. Her novel The Forgotten Sunday (2015) won the Booksellers Choice Award and the paperback edition has been long-selling best-seller since publication. The shadows of her past are never too far away but in the daily company of three gravediggers, the local undertakers and the priest, Violette comes to a realisation that her life now, alongside the resting place of the dead, is her version of heaven.

Violette's routine is disrupted one day by the arrival of police chief Julien Seul, wishing to deposit his mother's ashes on the gravesite of a complete stranger. At 22 percent I stated "This book has won me over but is absolutely devastating me over and fuckin over and fuckin over again.
