Description

Top quality Danish Oil is made to be absorbed into wood, protecting, nourishing and ‘feeding’ the wood from the inside. So the bottom line is be guided purely by aesthetic or practical considerations, like the degree of gloss or ease of applications. It is almost like the break-or-make moment that will allow you to fully enjoy your natural, solid timber surfaces. Danish oil is a great finishing option if you're looking to bring out the warm tones of oak and make it look more vibrant.

As with any coating, surface preparation is extremely important in getting a satisfactory end result. Although it is always advisable to sand along the grain, you can go across the grain for a couple of strokes to dig into the wood and remove a scratch or an imperfection. coats on new oak doors, 240 grade rub between coats and when dry buff them with a clean dry cotton towel. The smell completely disappears after about a day, so it’s nothing to worry about, but it is a good idea to work in an area where you can ventilate well. I'm getting close to the finishing stage, and decided on 2 possibilities to try: Clear poly, and Danish oil.Two more coats should be applied after the first, leaving four to six hours between each coat to ensure the previous application has completely dried before applying the next. Our Danish Oil is a unique blend of natural oils and resins that penetrate deep into the oak and dry to provide a hard, durable, and lustrous satin finish, making it suitable for high use areas such as flooring, dining tables and kitchen worktops.

This article discusses applying Danish oil over oak wood, the process, its pros, and cons, and compares it with some other popular wood finishes used on oak. Many pros err on the side of caution and wait a month or more, when possible, after the last coat has gone on. To confuse my little mind even more I asked Liberon which of their products they'd recommend using on BLO to shine it up. If you have oak worktops, we recommend using our Worktop Maintenance Kit, which includes the Danish Oil.They say that the reaction between the oil and the door would be pretty much immediate and obvious, so at least the one coat we have put on so far hasn't reacted. It is safe for food contact when dry and can be used for wooden bowls, chopping boards and butchers blocks.

This finish should also be applied at room temperature and in a well ventilated area -it will smell. It shouldn't take more than one or two days at room temp but until the finish has fully cured if you heat the surface again with hot plates or waffles you will very likely get a recurrence, since any partially-cured oil in the finish can liquefy when heated and capillary action will tend to bring it to the surface. If you'd like to try an experiment on a less important piece or on some scrap, there's no absolute need to sand between every coat – no matter if sprayed, wiped on or applied by brush/roller – you can build up many coats of finish until you have a good film and wet sand in one stage at the end. It’s something we get lots of questions about, which is why we’re sharing our full guide on how to apply Danish oil and why we think it’s the best protective finish for (almost) all of your wooden furniture and woodworking projects. It’s not a film finish - it dries and hardens in the wood, not on the wood so your work piece will not have a ‘plastic’ look.
