The banner now hangs in the front hall of the school alongside a photograph of the class posing with their design.

Martin's eye had been caught by a striking picture of a red lobster that Carle had created for an advertisement. As a child, Carle’s dad would take him for walks through meadows, memories which heavily influenced his illustrations. Painted ribbon collage, 'Flag of the Netherlands,' 595 x 465 mm, mounted on a 1,000 x 800 mm sheet, painted fabric ribbons on paper, signed 'EC' lower left and dated 'OO' lower right. Die Abbildungen sind toll ausgewählt, man bekommt wirklich einen schönen Einblick in das Leben eines außergewöhnlichen Künstlers.by Carle (Cleveland and New York: Wiliams Collins + World Publishing Company, 1978), pages 24 and 25.

Prior to the mid-1980s, Carle used commercially available, pre-dyed papers, the colors of which quickly faded. Amanda Hilburn is an artist who works primarily in acrylics, but also enjoys mixed media and watercolors inspired by the simple, stunning, artistry of nature; animals, flowers, water and more. Visitors of all ages will enjoy hands-on interactives, artmaking activities, and a reading library equipped with a range of Eric Carle’s books. Over a career spanning more than half a century, Eric Carle produced a string of classic American picture books, illustrated in his distinctive collage style. Now I use the thinnest paper I can find which happens to be the paper on the roll for bulletin boards. The book also contains an insightful autobiography illustrated with personal photographs, an anecdotal essay by his longtime editor, a photographic essay on how Carle creates his collages, and writings by Carle and his colleagues. And in some ways, teach kids that failure is okay, and there can be infinite other ways to work around a problem. His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has been translated into 70 languages and sold over 55 million copies. My grandchildren also LOVE his beautiful books, which are delightful visually and also written perfectly for their young imaginations!

For some retrospect, this book is up there in popularity with The Hobbit, The Catcher in the Rye, and dare I say, the Harry Potter series. The Prep students (first year at Primary school) were working on a theme of “Growth and Change” and the story “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” fits in beautifully. To that point, it is always important to ask kids questions, and to really give them the floor to speak. Then in that box goes several texture tools and several spill proof paint containers with paint and brushes. In contrast to the pain of publishing, he spoke of the meditative quality of glueing and painting his papers: “It’s like being in an alpha state: total peace. From Carle’s own words and pictures, and from the remembrances and essays of others, readers can piece together their own picture of an artist who is idealistic and compassionate as well as abundantly gifted. His most popular book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, in itself has sold over 55 million copies in over 70 languages.

We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. And I think that Eric Carle was a person who listened to children and influenced them to tell stories of their own. We discussed SYMMETRY- mirror images- same on both sides and looked at some pictures of butterflies and noticed the symmetrical designs. Also, for those interested in making similar art there is a gatefold section in the middle of the book about how to collage and make your own tissue paper. We watched an animated version of the story on Youtube, and I also had a copy of the book to look carefully at the pictures. It is important to invest time to collect materials to ensure a sufficient supply is available on hand. The theme of ‘change’ is a perennial one in primary school, and for Prep students, caterpillars to butterflies along with Eric Carle’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ is a wonderful inspiration for art lessons. His graphic design skills and his great affection for bold colors made his work in this period stand out. Since the Caterpillar was published in 1969, Eric Carle has illustrated more than 70 books, many best sellers, most of which he also wrote.
