They divided their time between Santa Barbara, California, and Louisville, Kentucky; [5] Humphrey taught at universities in both cities. The husband, Laurence Fife, was a philandering attorney with a loose moral code who had antagonized any number of potential suspects. She's a twice-divorced loner with few personal possessions and fewer personal attachments but with a soft spot for underdogs and lost causes. I thought of myself as suitably progressive when the novel described the main character wanting to date a guy, and putting on pantyhose.

Kinsey Millhone should have done something else—she should have turned the car in the direction of home. A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton started off pretty slow for me for most of the first half of the book but then it picked up after that and was fast paced all the way to the conclusion. Readers appreciate her buoyant style, her eye for detail, her deft hand with character, her acute social observances, and her abundant storytelling prowess. stars to A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton, the first book in the Kinsey Millhone private investigator cozy mystery series. Kinsey also finds out that Laurence's first wife, Gwen, had died in a suspicious accident, and Nikki had been Laurence's mistress at the time.

The mystery itself is believable and when we learn the truth about the deaths, we see that the motives behind everything make sense. My views in the following review reflect the person I was when I wrote them and may not reflect who I am today - for better or for worse.

She is about to meet her duplicitious match in a couple of world-class prevaricators who quite literally take her for the ride of her life. At first I thought maybe I would try reading a couple of her books before I made a decision, but I don't think I could make it through another book of this caliber. I had to go take some photographs of a crack in a sidewalk for an insurance claim and I left the office shortly after she did, taking my VW out the freeway. While I would love to be able to reread and update my reviews to reflect who I am today, I think my time is better dedicated elsewhere.

Overall, this is a promising start to a series I have long meant to read and I am sure I will not stop at the first letter of the alphabet. Published 2020) An unpublished story found among Sue Grafton's papers by her husband after her death and originally published in ’Deadly Anniversaries, edited by Marcia Muller and Bill Pronzini . The Kinsey Millhone stories, with one exception, appeared in magazines and mystery anthologies between 1986 and 1991.A wonderful character, tough but not brutish, resourceful and sensitive, a fit knight to walk those mean streets with her male predecessors. Kinsey and Me (2013) – a collection of nine Kinsey Millhone short stories along with 12 other short stories about Grafton's own mother. Because Nikki had been convicted by a jury who purportedly weighed the evidence presented by both the prosecuting and defense attorneys, she wasn't expecting to discover any new evidence. She’s intelligent and a good detective, but she’ll be the first one to say that she’s far from perfect. A twice-divorced loner with few personal possessions and fewer personal attachments, she's got a soft spot for underdogs and lost causes.

A trail that leads to a lawyer defensively loyal to a dead partner—and disarmingly attractive to Millhone; to an ex-wife, brave, lucid, lovely—and still angry over Fife's betrayal of her; to a not-so-young secretary with too high a salary for too few skills—and too many debts left owing: The trail twists to include every turn until it finally twists back on itself with a killer cunning enough to get away with murder. Once again breaking the rules and establishing new paths, Grafton wastes little time identifying this sociopath. I pulled the coffeepot from the bottom of the file cabinet and filled it from the Sparkletts water bottle behind the door. But, hey, maybe the author wanted to inspire us to get off our fat asses, put down the book, and run for no reason. She makes her share of mistakes too, and she’s not above telling a lie here or there to cover herself. Either way, I’ll need the tweezers, and there’ll be more poking and prodding and I’m probably not going to like that much either. Plenty of people in the picturesque Southern California town of Santa Teresa had reason to want him dead.
